2018/04 – Muloorina
Muloorina is our nearest beach. Around 220km to the north east of Roxby Downs, Muloorina Station is roughly halfway between Marree on the Oodnadatta Track and Lake Eyre. Near the homestead is the Muloorina Waterhole which is spring fed from the great artesian basin. The waterhole is home to a vast array of wildlife, especially birdlife, not to mention the station cattle and the occasional horse.
Not the best pace to be in the middle of summer when it can push 45 degrees celcius, either end of summer when it is in the mid 30’s is the perfect time to visit its waterhole and cooling waters.
The camp ground at Muloorina is run by the nearby Station which changes just $10 per vehicle per night and there are plenty of camp sites so that you never need to worry about your neighbours.
We went there for two weekends in a row in mid April. The temperatures were in the mid 30’s and for the first weekend we had the entire campsite and waterhole to ourselves.
If you are heading that way, consider a couple of cheap pool noodles, or better yet kayaks. The water hole is about 500 metres long and about half way along on the eastern side is where the water from the artesian bore flows into the waterhole. If you keep following this flow upstream towards the homestead it gets quite hot, so be warned.
If you are staying for more than a day, consider a drive out to Level Post Bay on the shores of Lake Eyre. It is around 50km and very remote, so make sure you go prepared. And on the way there or back, make sure to stop at the Marree Hotel. The Marree Burger is pretty good.
