Another weekend of perfect weather was forcast as coming our way so we decided to head south and find some new country to explore. We headed off Friday afternoon, only to find our recently serviced truck had a stray sound coming from the rear end. A quick stop off at the mechanics to find the source and we were on the road.
Due to the late departure we decided to camp just south of Roxby Downs, enjoying a beautiful pink sunset as we were setting up camp.
After a cold night, we headed south to the old Phillips Ponds station just north of Woomera where we headed east on what used to be the old Stuart Highway. The road is now well washed out and is a good, albeit relatively easy, test of the vehicle and driver
About 10km to the south the scenery changes. Nestled amongst the rolling gibber plains you come upon an area of sandhills mostly covered with native calytris pines, hence its name ‘The Pines’. Not surprisingly this is also the name of the now disused, and going to ruin, station.
We spent the afternoon exploring the nearby Spring Creek before setting up Wedgie130 amongst the sandhills and preparing roast lamb in the camp oven before tucking up early as the nights chill decended on us and the thermometer dropped to zero.
